WROLC

The Western Regional Outdoor Leadership Conference (WROLC) is a collaboration of university outdoor programs, and this year the conference will be hosted by our very own Sac State!

This year’s WROLC theme “Rekindle Your Connection with the Outdoors” goes beyond simple appreciation, pushing participants to rethink how we engage with nature. WROLC envisions a future where the outdoors is not just for adventure but is central to sustainable living, mindful leadership, and ecological harmony.

Through discussions, interactive sessions, and workshops, we aim to break old paradigms and explore how nature can be integrated into our communities and personal growth. We believe that by challenging traditional thinking, we can foster a new era of outdoor leadership that values conservation, inclusivity, and innovation.

Join us as we explore the untapped potential of the outdoors and reshape how we connect with the natural world. Together, let’s create a future where the outdoors is not just a destination but an integral part of our evolving consciousness.

I am so thrilled to have been invited to host a campfire chat on Friday, January 17. Any university student is welcome to attend - registration through Sac State!

Sacramento Valley Conservancy Speaker Series

The Sacramento Valley Conservancy (SVC) hosts a Speaker Series each Thursday evening during the spring.

Join Ashley Shult Langdon as she shares the journey behind Mildly Scenic: A Trail Guide to Sacramento's Lower American River. What began as a personal exploration of the river soon led to the unexpected path of becoming an author.

Ashley will recount how discovering the hidden gems of the Lower American River deepened her connection to Sacramento and inspired her to write a trail guide. Along the way, the project brought in a number of talented collaborators from within the Sacramento community, helping bring the book to life.

This talk offers a fresh perspective on both the river and the joys of exploration—whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, or simply looking for new ways to connect with the world around you.

The Making of Mildly Scenic

Join us for a cozy evening, on a rare opportunity hosted by East Sac’s neigborhood bookstore, East Village Bookshop. There will be wine from Amador City’s End of Nowhere, and a rich conversation on the collaborative process of storytelling through words, design, and maps.

Until Mildly Scenic, many of the trails along the Lower American River parkway were never mapped — Not online, not in books, not on park maps. Learn about the challenge this posed, how Sac State’s Geography Department swooped in to support the project, how Greg Traverso worked his design magic, and how the vision of this mildly useful trail guide came to fruition!

$25/ticket, includes a copy of Mildly Scenic and refreshments.

Panelists for the evening will include:

  • Ashley Shult Langdon, author of Mildly Scenic

  • Greg Traverso, Graphic Designer and Brand Developer

  • Anna Klimaszewki-Patterson, Professor of Geography

  • Matt Schmidtlein, Professor and Chair of Geography
